7 Tips To Save Your Hairline When Wearing Wigs

For most women experiencing hair loss, it affects their self-esteem, body image, and self-confidence. Hair loss is generally more tolerated in men however for women it's not looked on favorable. It can reduce a person’s self-esteem and negatively affect their overall quality of life such as diminishing social engagements.

Hair loss in women

“Hair loss in a woman is so emotionally devastating that it can trigger a wide range of social and emotional issues that can negatively impact healthy daily living and overall quality of life. I have heard of women that retreat from social situations, has diminished work performance, and even alter their healthy living – avoiding exercise, overeating, not treating other medical illnesses – due to their hair loss,” said Dr. Francis, a dermatologist, and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Bald spot in head

According to Dr. Glashofer, a dermatologist and fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, women experience greater emotional impact due to society’s perception of beauty. “Society unjustly puts an inordinate amount of pressure on beauty and a great deal of this comes from perceptions of hair,” he said.

Here are 7 tips you can do to prevent your edges from thinning and falling out when wearing your lace wigs.

1. Do not braid your hair tightly at the hairline. Your edges are the thinnest part of your hair and they are very fragile. Too much tension can cause the hair follicles from coming out which results in having a bald spot. It is best to leave out your edges when braiding your hair under your wigs or reduce maneuvering your edges all the time. Now and again take a break from over-styling.

2. Use a wig cap when wearing your wigs. Many people skip this step but I would urge you not to. This reduces the amount of friction created between your hair and your wig. Hence less hair loss.

3. DO NOT APPLY HAIR GLUE ON YOUR EDGES. Apply the glue at least 1/2 inch below your hairline onto your skin and never directly onto your edges. Remember it is all in the application.

4. Massage your edges. This increases the circulating blood flow to the scalp. By massaging your edges you are localizing the blood flow to that area.

5. Be gentle when handling your edges. Over brushing your edges with a hard bristle brush can eventually weaken them. use a soft brush when taming your edges.

6. Moisturize your edges. Do not over-grease your hairline which can cause clogged pores. Intensive conditioning is key for your hairline growth. Try to incorporate weekly deep conditioning treatments and use a protein-based leave-in conditioner.

7. Eat a proper diet to get adequate nutrients and take appropriate vitamins to aid with hair growth.
